About  us

The birth of a child is an important event in life. In this study, we are particularly interested in how the birth of the first child affects both the work and family situation of men (and their partners). This project is carried out by the University of Leuven (KU Leuven) in collaboration with the University of Koblenz-Landau in Germany, and led by Carolin Scheifele, Prof. Dr. Colette van Laar, and Prof. Dr. Melanie Steffens. The research is financed by the Research Foundation - Flanders (FWO).

More information

Welcome to our research project Study for future dads! First of all, we would like to thank you for your interest in participating in this research.

The study focuses on men and their partners who are expecting their first child. It consists of three surveys which you can complete online (for men, ca. 20-40 minutes per survey; partners receive a shorter survey). We ask you to complete the first survey about 3 months before the birth of your child, the second one about 4 months after birth and the third one about 12 months after birth.

Your data will be treated confidentially and anonymously.

As a compensation for your participation, you receive vouchers from FNAC of max. 30€. You receive a voucher of 10€ directly after you completed the first survey. At the end of the study, after the third survey, you receive 10€ vouchers for each additional survey you completed (i.e., 20€ if you completed the second and third survey, 10€ if you completed one of those). On top of that, you have the chance to win a Bongo voucher for a family weekend trip (or if you prefer, a voucher of 200€), provided you participate in all surveys. If your partner also participates in the study, they can take part in an additional raffle of vouchers and increase your chances of winning a prize. Moreover, everyone (regardless of future dad or not) can receive a voucher of 30€ from FNAC if they refer three future dads to the study who fill in the first survey (or a respective portion, e.g., 10€ for one future dad). To do that, please follow this link: https://leidenuniv.eu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_2nQAcsw403nxj38

Participation offers you the opportunity to reflect on your experiences and decisions in this important phase of life. Moreover, you contribute to increasing scientific knowledge, which men and women in the future may benefit from during the transition to parenthood, and the combination of parenthood and work. After the study, we will share the research findings with you (if you are interested).

Further updates on this research will appear on this website. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact us using the contact form below.
